After School Activities - The Fay School
After School Activities (ASA) are a variety of enrichment classes offered through The Fay School’s partnership with Fay Faculty and local teaching professionals. The cost of these classes varies; ranging from $300 - $600 per semester, depending on the subject matter and the number of sessions offered per semester. Classes are offered once a week for an hour.

Registration for these programs is available to currently enrolled students. Registration opens on November 14, 2022, and is held online through the Extended Day Registration Module which can be accessed through My Portal or directly through our Extended Day Registration Module.

Junior Athletes - Mondays
The Junior Athletes program is designed to allow students to experience a wide range of activities. Sports based lessons (soccer, basketball, baseball, flag football, tennis, etc.) along with fun fitness activities (dodgeball, obstacle courses, bowling, scooter boards, relay races, etc.) will be introduced throughout each semester. Students will practice cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork. It is important that students experience success while learning. We will work to instill into each student the skills and confidence needed to succeed!

Yoga with Zen Kids - Mondays
Yoga for kids is all about stillness AND movement. In this class, children are able to develop flexibility, focus, and coordination for a happy, healthy, and balanced life. The students have a blast playing games, learning breathing techniques, dancing, practicing mini-meditations, and creating their own yoga adventures! We often integrate yoga poses through meaningful story-telling that teaches concepts such as kindness, how to be present, believing in yourself, and the importance of gratitude. Kids’ yoga helps to increase confidence, build focus, improve emotional regulation, and release energy.

Imaginations at Work - Tuesdays
Improve your child’s literacy skills through Imaginations at Work! During this class, children are given the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and learning experiences to build and improve vocabulary, phonological skills, word recognition, narrative skills, letter knowledge, and storytelling. This is a learning experience that not only improves literacy skills but builds self-confidence while empowering children to use their own creativity to stimulate their imaginations!
About the Instructor: Joan Katrib has designed our Imaginations at Work classes. She served as a Primary I Assistant Teacher at The Fay School for many years and has mentored with The Rice Literacy Project for over twenty years. Mrs. Katrib loves teaching because she enjoys inspiring children to use their imaginations while learning in a fun and meaningful way. Through creating and acting in stories, children retain the information learned during the class. She loves to share stories with children and listen to their own stories from their imaginations at work.

Tennis - Tuesdays
Come serve it up with TGA Premier Youth Tennis! TGA has partnered with the United States Tennis Association to create a fun and innovative tennis program for your child. TGA’s five-level elementary school curriculum includes games, drills, and physical fitness activities. Every TGA class focuses on academic concepts developed by educational experts along with the rules and etiquette of tennis. TGA brings all the equipment, training materials, and a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio to allow for plenty of individual attention. Our goal is to develop our students’ tennis skills and give children the building blocks for future achievement on the tennis court and in life.
*Please register for this class only one day of the week. Two-day per week registrations will be adjusted.

Art - Tuesdays
In this class led by Fay's Kindergarten Assistant Teacher, Mr. Froelich, your children will be introduced to artists throughout history through a hands-on and interactive class. Children will explore first by learning basic art techniques such as line, color, value, and texture through which they will be able to create their own masterpieces. Your children will use multiple kinds of materials such as oil pastels, clay, paint, and collage. This unique learning experience will put an emphasis on having fun while also exploring your child’s innate creativity. This will provide a foundation for future art lovers and artists.

Creative Chefs - Mondays and Wednesdays
Are your children asking to help cook or bake in the kitchen? Then Creative Chefs is perfect for your child! Every chef will learn skills such as kitchen hygiene, kitchen safety, and utensil skills. Throughout the semester, chefs will create appetizers, main entrees, side dishes, salads, and desserts, as well as explore different cultures by creating foods from various parts of the world. Each week, our recipes will alternate between sweet and savory. *Soccer Shots classes will begin on September 9th, one week after other After School Activities.

Your child will dance with delight all semester! Students are taught fundamental Ballet and Jazz skills in this class. For class, students need to have a leotard (any color), pink leather ballet shoes for girls/black leather ballet shoes for boys, and tights (optional). Students must be registered in the Spring semester to participate in the recital at the end of the year.

Olympia Tae Kwon Do - Wednesdays
Master Bruce and Olympia Tae Kwon Do is back! Master Bruce is an 8th degree Black Belt who has been practicing Tae Kwon Do for over forty years. He has over thirty years of experience teaching children and adults and has produced over 2,000 black belt students. Master Bruce opened Olympia Tae Kwon Do in 1988 and has taught at private schools throughout the Houston area for almost twenty years. Master Bruce uses Tae Kwon Do to help students improve concentration, confidence, and focus while also emphasizing the importance of positivity and respect. Master Bruce teaches Tae Kwon Do techniques through a variety of drills to help improve students’ balance, attention span, and more. Classes are a combination of learning basic self-defense moves (blocks, kicks, and punches) as well as games and drills to improve coordination and focus. Each registered student will receive a Tae Kwon Do uniform.

Imagineers in Gear - Thursdays
You will learn engineering key concepts and fundamentals building with LEGO elements from the creative tool kit. Students will be challenged to use pieces to create a structure or setting using LEGO elements. Students will engage with hands-on experience including fun and challenging activities. Students will learn to identify build pieces and their function required to build structures and or settings. This program offers STEM-STEAM curriculum as well diversity, self-esteem, social competency, collaboration and more. Concepts and Core values are taught to prepare students for life challenges.

At Brown’s Gymnastics, our goal is to make healthy, happy, and confident kids. We specialize in great instruction from a highly trained staff, thinking of ourselves as teachers, not just coaches. It is not enough to just show a child a trick; we help them to understand it and then guide them through the experiences of failure and success. We recognize that not every student is the same. That is where our almost 30 years of experience comes in. We use time-proven methods to get the best results possible, all while having tons of fun!

Investigative Science Lab - Fridays
Students will learn the fundamentals of nature and the history of science in this class. Students will explore the beginning steps of the scientific method and put those to use through hands-on projects that develop their critical thinking and deductive reasoning. As they utilize the scientific method, they will be creating models of various significant scientific inventions to test their hypotheses.

3-2-1…Swish! Join us for Fast Break Basketball where we’ll “cross-over” between GAME PLAY and skills stations. The games within the game are where we will expose players to HOOPS skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Test your abilities having fun scrimmaging or playing games like Dribble Scribble, King of the Court, Hot Shot Shooting, Knock Out, and MORE! Be ready to take that last second shot, make that extra pass, and block that go ahead basket while learning the fundamentals of Basketball and the concepts of teamwork.

Ceramics - Tuesdays
This ceramics course, taught by Glassel Junior School, places emphasis on individual creativity and the development of design skills as students receive instruction in hand-building, clay sculpture techniques and the use of special tools and glazes to create finished pieces.
About Glassel Junior School: The Glassell Junior School is an art school for young people, devoted to nurturing creativity and dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the arts and an awareness of the world. Classes and workshops for children ages 4 through 18 are offered year-round. The Glassell School is known as the “teaching wing” of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Musical Theatre - Wednesdays
Develop confidence in the area of performing arts with singing, acting and dancing sessions with Mrs. Caldwell. Each week students will develop and put their creative skills to use through a variety of theatrical activities using materials from popular musicals. In addition to building their confidence, they will learn to work in groups enhancing problem-solving abilities and also learn to be leaders. While sessions are all meant to train and give theatrical technique, the environment is still meant to be fun and engaging for all the students. The students will all prepare for a parent invited showcase of the activities, skills and repertoire of what they have studied to end the theatrical course.

Robotics - Wednesdays
You have gotten a little crazy and possibly even finished our apprenticeship. Are ready to stair-step your way to the top? If so, this is the first class for you to consider. Now you can collaborate with your teammates to prepare an Infrared Wireless robot for a variety of activity-based challenges. Students will explore the use of motors, gears, pulleys, and IR technology while building Lego Robot inventions. Each build will be followed by a thrilling challenge that illustrates the need for “simplicity” and the pitfalls of “complexity”. Students will be provided with a creative tool kit to design their bots!

3-2-1…Swish! Join us for Fast Break Basketball where we’ll “cross-over” between GAME PLAY and skills stations. The games within the game are where we will expose players to HOOPS skills like dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defense. Test your abilities having fun scrimmaging or playing games like Dribble Scribble, King of the Court, Hot Shot Shooting, Knock Out, and MORE! Be ready to take that last second shot, make that extra pass, and block that go ahead basket while learning the fundamentals of Basketball and the concepts of teamwork.

Code Ninjas - Fridays
Students will build a foundation of basic game development concepts by learning to use Minecraft Education by Microsoft. Beginning with instruction on keyboarding and computer skills, learning will scaffold to building various challenges in Minecraft. Throughout this class, students will learn game design concepts, including how to make backgrounds and characters, create and hide objects, and code arrow keys! By the end of the semester, students will have completed multiple exercises in Minecraft that will demonstrate an understanding of how to think like an architect by problem-solving and creating in 3D.

These include helping young people gain admission and scholarships to prestigious universities as well as providing a life-long sport in which physique and age are not limitations.

Creative Chefs - Mondays
Are your children asking to help cook or bake in the kitchen? Then Creative Chefs is perfect for your child! Every chef will learn skills such as kitchen hygiene, kitchen safety, and utensil skills. Throughout the semester, chefs will create appetizers, main entrees, side dishes, salads, and desserts, as well as explore different cultures by creating foods from various parts of the world. Each week, our recipes will alternate between sweet and savory.

Yoga with Zen Kids - Mondays
Yoga for kids is all about stillness AND movement! We practice breathing techniques and meditate, but we also stretch, strengthen, balance, and wiggle. In this class, the students have a blast putting together different sequences, playing games, dancing, and creating their own yoga adventures! We also discuss valuable mindfulness topics and complete fun crafts to reinforce these ideas. Topics include: how to handle worries, being present, practicing gratitude, the power of positive thinking, showing love and kindness to others, and appreciating your uniqueness. Kids’ yoga helps to increase positive moods, build concentration, develop self-awareness, and manage stress.

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun, informative and challenging chess lessons to students. Chess Wizards teaches children many important life concepts, such as learning the ability to win graciously and accept defeat with dignity and sportsmanship. Students will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of this session, each student would have had the chance to participate in a mini-chess tournament.

About Glassell Junior School: The Glassell Junior School is an art school for young people, devoted to nurturing creativity and dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the arts and an awareness of the world. In Intro to Roblox Development, students learn the basics of game building and creative development in Roblox: an exciting, user-generated online gaming platform similar to Minecraft®. Students will use Roblox Studio to create much more than just a game! Open to all levels of experience, this class will teach students how to plan, design and build their own 3D world. Intro to Roblox Development is a hands-on, fully guided experience led by our awesome team of Code Senseis. By the end of the class, ninjas will have created up to eight Roblox worlds, with at least two utilizing provided scripts. Students will leave course feeling comfortable building and designing worlds in Roblox, as well as understanding the concept of a script and how to apply it to enhance the functionality of their worlds

Olympia Tae Kwon Do - Wednesdays
Master Bruce and Olympia Tae Kwon Do is back! Master Bruce is an 8th degree Black Belt who has been practicing Tae Kwon Do for over forty years. He has over thirty years of experience teaching children and adults and has produced over 2,000 black belt students. Master Bruce opened Olympia Tae Kwon Do in 1988 and has taught at private schools throughout the Houston area for almost twenty years. Master Bruce uses Tae Kwon Do to help students improve concentration, confidence, and focus while also emphasizing the importance of positivity and respect. Master Bruce teaches Tae Kwon Do techniques through a variety of drills to help improve students’ balance, attention span, and more. Classes are a combination of learning basic self-defense moves (blocks, kicks, and punches) as well as games and drills to improve coordination and focus. Each registered student will receive a Tae Kwon Do uniform.

Each week students will develop and put their creative skills to use through a variety of theatrical activities using materials from popular musicals. In addition to building their confidence, they will learn to work in groups enhancing problem-solving abilities and also learn to be leaders. While sessions are all meant to train and give theatrical technique, the environment is still meant to be fun and engaging for all the students. The students will all prepare for a parent invited showcase of the activities, skills and repertoire of what they have studied to end the theatrical course.

Come serve it up with TGA Premier Youth Tennis! TGA has partnered with the United States Tennis Association to create a fun and innovative tennis program for your child. TGA’s five-level elementary school curriculum includes games, drills, and physical fitness activities. Every TGA class focuses on academic concepts developed by educational experts along with the rules and etiquette of tennis. TGA brings all the equipment, training materials, and a 10:1 student-to-instructor ratio to allow for plenty of individual attention. Our goal is to develop our students’ tennis skills and give children the building blocks for future achievement on the tennis court and in life.

The Fay School Piano Studio
The Fay School Piano Studio offers private piano lessons after school to students in Primary II through Fifth Grade. The program covers a wide variety of musical aspects, such as music reading, basic piano technique, musicianship, and performance. Piano encourages creativity, boosts self-esteem, develops fine motor skills, rhythm, and hand-eye coordination. It also improves concentration, discipline, focus, patience, as well as counting and math skills. Registration occurs with the piano teachers. Students must have a piano (acoustic or digital) so they can practice at home. Lessons are offered once a week, and the cost is $60/30-min lesson. Dr. Karina Praxedes Barnett
Dr. Karina Praxedes Barnett, a native of Natal, Brazil, has been a piano instructor at The Fay School since 2005. She loves teaching the little ones the fun of reading music at the piano. Her teaching approach emphasizes sight-reading skills, basic piano technique, and recital preparation. Dr. Barnett holds a position at Westbury United Methodist Church as Music Associate. Her past experiences include positions as piano faculty at UFRN in Brazil and as staff accompanist at University of Houston’s Moores School of Music. In 2003, she participated in an exchange program sponsored by Rotary International in which she did a series of five recitals throughout England, which originated her album entitled Ciclo Brasileiro. Dr. Barnett earned a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from UFPB, a Master of Arts from UNICAMP, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance/Collaborative Arts from the University of Houston, where she was a student of Timothy Hester.
Dr. Beatriz Pimentel Montoya
Dr. Beatriz Pimentel Montoya was born in Brasília, Brazil, where she received her early musical education. She obtained a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Brasília, a Master of Music from the University of Wyoming, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance, Chamber Music and Collaborative Arts from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where she was a student of Nancy Weems and Timothy Hester. Dr. Montoya is the recipient of various awards in national and international piano competitions, and has performed extensively as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and professional accompanist. Dr. Montoya has held a private piano studio at The Fay School since 2001, where she has helped develop an after-school piano program focused on music reading, technique, and performance skills. Her main goal is to instill the love of music in young children through a fun yet disciplined private lesson program, and to offer this opportunity to children of all levels and abilities.
