At The Fay School, we hold a simple conviction: leadership development is not an “add-on” to education—it is education. Our vision is clear: to deliberately build and educate the next generation of leaders for our world. To achieve this, we focus on cultivating the hallmarks of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, social-awareness, motivation, regulation, and relationship skills—beginning in early childhood.
Learning Beyond the Classroom Walls
We know children thrive when they connect their learning to the real world. That’s why we design experiential education rooted in project-, play-, and place-based approaches. Just as importantly, our campus itself functions as a “third teacher.” In our outdoor spaces, students explore freely, take healthy risks, and discover what leadership looks like in authentic settings. Layered with the Responsive Classroom approach, this model ensures that social-emotional learning isn’t a side lesson—it’s woven into the daily fabric of school life.
Rethinking Technology and Childhood
This summer, our faculty and staff engaged in a collective reading of Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation to reflect on the intersection of technology, childhood, and learning. The questions we asked ourselves mirror those facing parents, educators, and communities everywhere:
-
Are we overprotecting children in the real world while under-protecting them online?
-
What problems do devices solve, and what problems do they create?
-
What’s lost when free play and outdoor exploration are replaced by screens?
-
How can we nurture independence and responsibility in tangible, real-world contexts?
-
How do we prepare students to navigate both the digital and physical worlds wisely?
Partnering for the Future
In response, Fay is launching a new partnership with The Social Institute, an organization at the forefront of equipping young people with the skills and character to make positive choices with technology. This collaboration reflects our commitment to preparing students not just for academic success, but for life in a rapidly evolving world.
A Call to Action
The challenge before educators and parents today is urgent: how do we cultivate resilience, creativity, and leadership in children who are growing up in an always-connected world? At Fay, we believe the answer lies in balancing digital literacy with real-world exploration, grounding academics in emotional intelligence, and empowering children to lead with both courage and character.
Because ultimately, the greatest measure of success is not test scores or transcripts—it’s the joy, curiosity, and courage of children who are ready to lead.
